Surge Protection — Whole-House & Switchboard
Coastal storms knock the corridor lines around in winter. A nearby lightning strike or grid spike can take out a $3k fridge, a TV, a solar inverter and a CCTV NVR in one go. Whole-house surge protection at the switchboard catches it before it gets to the appliances.

- Whole-house surge protection device (SPD) install at the main switchboard
- Type 1 + Type 2 SPD selection based on your property's exposure
- Sub-board surge protection for granny flats, sheds and detached studios
- SPD replacement after a strike (these are sacrificial — they take the hit so your appliances don't, but they need replacing afterwards)
- Dedicated surge protection for high-value gear — solar inverters, CCTV NVR, server gear

Newer Burns Beach builds where the modern solar inverter is the most expensive thing on the property and worth dedicated protection. FAQs
Doesn't my powerboard already have surge protection?
Plug-in powerboards have minor protection — not whole-house. They protect the gear plugged into them, not the rest of the house.
Will it survive a lightning strike?
A direct hit, no — nothing survives a direct hit. A nearby strike or grid surge, yes — the SPD takes the hit and saves your gear.
How often do they need replacing?
Only after a major event. Modern SPDs have an indicator window — green means fine, red means it's done its job and needs swapping.
